Brain Gym® and Dyscalculia

Our Brain Gym Focus on Dyscalculia

In Brain Gym we focus on improving the skills of the person with Dyscalculic traits and use specialised techniques some of which are unique to Brain Gym, to make learning and living easier and more productive. In Brain Gym, we do not dwell on the things one can not do well or on the labels ascribed by others. We focus on improving the skills of the person with dyslexic traits and use specialised techniques developed by founder Dr. Paul Dennison. These include re-patterning the way the brain processes information and shares this information internally each time we read, hear or express numbers in speech or in writing.

Brain Gym Approach to Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia can affect the visual, auditory and kinaesthetic (movement) aspects of our learning and expression of number. Brain Gym approaches the difficulties experienced by those with Dyscalculia traits on a number of fronts, addressing and facilitating the visual, auditory and kinaesthetic (movement) aspects and facilitating them to see, hear, think and express themselves more effectively.

Positive Attitudes and Self-esteem

Many people experiencing dyscalculic traits are faced with frequent frustration in social, education and work situations as they misinterpret, misconstrue and may misrepresent what is before them. This can lead to low self esteem and a negative attitude. We address this in Brain Gym® with a “Positive Attitude Balance”.

Visual , Auditory & Kinaesthetic Approach

We facilitate changes in the way the person sees and processes number in what we call a “Seeing Balance”.

We facilitate changes in hearing, thinking and memory using number in a “Listening Balance”.

We deal with poor handwriting and poorly formed numbers, orientation of numbers, place value and other aspects of dyscalculia, in a balance called the “Writing Balance”. This also facilitates the flow of writing numbers and can facilitate those with number blockages.

Co-Ordination

Then the “Whole Body Movement Balance” is used to improve co-ordination, fine motor skills and to increase the efficiency of the brain and body in dealing with number activities .

Unique Brain Gym Technique

Dr. Paul Dennison developed a special technique that can be used to facilitate the way the person operates and make it possible for those with dyscalculic traits to function much closer to their true potential. This technique is called the “Dennison Laterality Re-patterning”.

This re-patterning can facilitate the person to use their Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic aspects more efficiently and so they can read use number more accurately and freely and so work closer to their true potential.

Wonder Balance

Dr. Paul Dennison has shown how all of these mini balances can be combined in one bigger balance process called the “Wonder Balance”

Communication

Then we can do a specialised balance call the “Laterality Balance” which can be used to improve “Communication”. This works to improve connections across the corpus callosum  between the keft and right sides of the brain. On one side we hold the concepts ideas and meaning of the letters and number we use. On the other side of the brain we store the rules and logic with which we use these. Where the two sides are repatterned to communicate better we have had glowing reports of changes observed by students and adults who previously were held back by poor numeracy and mathematical skills.

Organisation

The “Centring Balance” can be used to greatly improve organisation of thoughts, numbers in speech and text. This can also improve the ability of the person with dyscalculia to manage their resources, money, books, writing materials, sports gear, calendar etc. Also, this balance can facilitate them to be tidier and have the necessary items with them when needed.

Comprehension

We can use the "Focus Balance" to improve visual focus as well as the ability to concentrate and focus attention. This balance can also be used to improve comprehension of numbers read, heard and observed. This balance can be useful also, where someone “can not see the wood for the trees” or where one is over focus on detail and misses the point.

Full Potential Realised

We have a further balance called the "XSPAN Balance" which combines all of the above balances into one bigger balance and this can be used when appropriate to rapidly bring a person with dyscalculic traits closer to their true potential in learning, movement, expression and ease of living.

Those with dyscalculic tendencies who have experienced Brain Gym® for themselves know it has made a real difference to the way they function and made their lives much easier.

Further Information ob how Brain Gym can be used to assist people with Dyspraxia

For more information or to arrange an appointment for yourself or someone you care about please call or text us at 086 1723510  +353861723510. .

Each session lasts about an hour (first session 90 minutes) during which the person’s needs will be assessed, Brain Gym® will be used and the person will be facilitated to make real and lasting changes and helped to overcome / take control over some of their dyscalculic traits.

For more information or to arrange an appointment for yourself or someone you care about please call or text us at 086 1723510  +353861723510.

We teach all of these techniques to parents and carers over two weekends as the Brain Gym Course.

DYSCALCULIA SYMPTOMS

Normal or accelerated language acquisition: verbal, reading, writing. Poetic ability. Good visual memory for the printed word. Good in the areas of science (until a level requiring higher math skills is reached), geometry (figures with logic not formulas), and creative arts.

Difficulty with the abstract concepts of time and  direction. Inability to recall schedules, and sequences of past or future events. Unable to keep track of time. May be chronically late.

Mistaken recollection of names. Poor name/face retrieval. Substitute names beginning with same letter.

Inconsistent results in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Poor mental math ability. Poor with money and credit. Cannot do financial planning or budgeting. Checkbooks not balanced. Short term, not long term financial thinking. Fails to see big financial picture. May have fear of money and cash transactions. May be unable to mentally figure change due back, the amounts to pay for tips, taxes, etc.

When writing, reading and recalling  numbers, these common mistakes are made: number additions, substitutions, transpositions, omissions, and reversals.

Inability to grasp and remember math concepts, rules, formulas, sequence (order of operations), and basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Poor long term memory  (retention & retrieval) of concept mastery- may be able to perform math operations one day, but draw a blank the next! May be able to do book work but fails all tests and quizzes.

May be unable to comprehend or "picture" mechanical processes. Lack "big picture/ whole picture" thinking. Poor ability to "visualize or picture" the location of the numbers on the face of a clock, the  geographical locations of states, countries, oceans, streets, etc.

Poor memory for the "layout" of things.  Gets lost or disoriented easily. May have a poor sense of direction, loose things often, and seem absent minded. (Remember the absent minded professor?)

May have difficulty grasping concepts of formal music education. Difficulty sight-reading music, learning fingering to play an instrument, etc.

May have poor athletic coordination, difficulty keeping up with rapidly changing physical directions like in aerobic, dance, and exercise classes. Difficulty remembering dance step sequences, rules for playing sports.

Difficulty keeping score during games, or difficulty remembering how to keep score in games, like bowling, etc. Often looses track of whose turn it is during games, like cards and board games. Limited strategic planning ability for games, like chess.

SOME FAMOUS GIFTED CHILDREN WITH DYSCALCULIA

Some of the most famous gifted children suffered strange childhood incongruencies in development. Einstein did not speak a word until he was four and had early difficulties with arithmetic. Thomas Edison did not learn to read until he was 9, and was considered a delinquent. Wernher Von Braun, the father of rocketry, flunked 9th grade Algebra. (Moore 1981, 2-3)

William James, an avid reader and prolific writer, wrote, "I am myself a very poor visualiser, and find that I can seldom call to mind even a single letter of the alphabet in purely retinal terms. I must retrace the letter by running my mental eye over its contour in order that the image of it shall have any distinctness at all." (Vail 1979, 30)

Benjamin Franklin never remembered a time when he could not read. At the Boston Grammar School, Franklin, 8-years-old, studied the classics so he could become a minister. He learned quickly and became the top student. By the middle of his first year of school, he was promoted to the next level and was expected to be promoted again before the year's end.

Franklin's father decided to remove him and put him into a private school to better prepare him for a more professional, worldly career. By the end of his second and last year of formal schooling, Franklin performed exceptionally in every subject, but arithmetic, which he failed. His father then removed him from school and put him to work. From then on, Franklin educated himself, worked, apprenticed at his brother's print shop at 12, and eventually became a great scientist, statesman, writer, and publisher. (Kelly 1996, 19-26)
